Adjustment to fatherhood is challenging for most new fathers and can lead to feelings of overwhelm, stress, frustration, depression, anxiety and even anger.
GLOW perinatal psychologist Saba Elkman notes the 3 reasons a new father may seek his help:
-
Challenges trying to balance the new demands and responsibilities of parenting with the demands of work while struggling with reduced and disputed sleep
-
Uncertainty about this new role of father including how best to support their partner and how to be the best dad they can be
-
Feelings of disconnection from their partner and loss of a sense of identity in part due to the shift of focus from the partner relationship to a focus on the baby
Something can be done and help is available.
Saba shares his top 4 pieces of advice:
- Develop new ways of connecting to your partner and also reach out and connect with friends and family
- Understand the important role that you play in the emotional life of your child and family and identify helpful ways to support your partner – such as skills of listening and providing emotional and practical support.
- Reflect on the type of father you would like to be – including aspects of your relationship with your parents that you may wish to repeat or avoid
- Develop skills of mindfully noticing feelings of stress, frustration and anger so that you may address them rather than immediately react to them
Saba is available to support fathers as they adjust to fatherhood.
